Tourney Round-Up: Spokane Sounders show well at Crossfire, Surf Cup and more

The inaugural season for the Spokane Sounders is off to a fantastic start this summer with outstanding performances away from home in recent weeks, and followed it up with a great start in local tournament action last weekend at the River City Cup.

Spokane Sounders sides kicked things off with a great showing at the Crossfire Challenge with seven teams reaching their respective finals and coming away with four championships over the event's two weekends.

CROSSFIRE CHALLENGE WEEK ONE -- Five Spokane Sounders teams advanced to the Finals in their Crossfire Challenge brackets with three coming away as champions. Eight teams had advanced beyond group play to the semifinals.

The G02B ladies swept their U15 Silver bracket with a 3-1 win over Washington East in the Final and the two B98-99 squads came away champions in the U19 brackets. The Rave squad won the Gold division with a 1-0 win over Greater Seattle Surf, avenging their earlier 3-2 defeat in group play, and the Shale squad finished unbeaten (4-0-1) with a 3-0 win over Seattle United for the Silver division title.

CROSSFIRE CHALLENGE WEEK TWO --  The G05 Valley-A squad reached the Crossfire U12 Girls Gold Final and the G05 North-A for advanced to the U12 Girls Silver Final. The G03-A team won the Girls U14 Gold tournament at the Crossfire Challenge with a perfect record.

PLEASANTON RAGE COLLEGE SHOWCASE -- Three Spokane Sounders squads traveled to California for the Pleasanton Rage College Showcase and performed well in an event that featured unbalanced schedules in group play (4 games in 8-10 team groups) with no playoffs. The three teams were all .500 or better in the event with a combined record of 5-2-5. The G99-A ladies were 3-0-1 in the U19 Super-5 group, finishing second to the side they lost to, Simi Valley SC Eclipse. The G00-A girls finished third in their Super-1 group (1-1-2) behind the hosts, who they lost to, and SJ Earthquakes Academy, which they did not play. The G01-A team were also 1-1-2 on the weekend, finishing fourth in the U16 Super-1 bracket.

SURF CUP -- Things started off well on the first day with the three sides in San Diego going unbeaten in four games. The B02-A Boys played to a 2-2 draw against Oxnard United, the eventual Black Bracket group-winner, and the B00-A Boys battled host San Diego Surf Academy to a scoreless draw in the White Bracket. The G98-A ladies, though, posted a 4-0 win over Scottsdale Soccer Blackhawks and a second victory, 2-1, over LVPSA Red later in the day. The B02-A boys went on to tie Westside Timbers 0-0 the next day before suffering a defeat while the B00-A gentlemen were handed a pair of 3-1 losses the second day. The young ladies continued their fine performance in the Women's U19 Black Bracket with a 1-0 victory against Albion SC Academy to reach the semifinals, where they fell 3-0 to Albion SC White.

RIVER CITY CUP -- Four Spokane Sounders sides won championships at the River City Cup at Plantes Ferry while six others finished as runners-up in their respective brackets. Spokane Sounders captured the BU15, GU11 Gold, GU12 and GU11 Silver titles. The GU11 Gold bracket was an all Spokane Sounders contest. Teams earned medals as finalists in the GU11 Gold, GU16 Silver, GU13, BU12 and BU11 Gold brackets. An additional two teams reached the semifinals in the BU13 and GU14 brackets.
