Shadow Women Sweep Oregon Sides

Shadow Women Sweep Oregon Sides

Sunday, June 24, 2019

The Spokane Shadow Women's First Team, the top female sports team in the community, posted a pair of one-sided results in the WPSL on the weekend against a pair of teams visiting from Oregon, downing Eugene Timbers Azul 5-1 on Saturday and rolling past Westside Timbers 8-0 Sunday in their Home Finale.

Nine different players scored on the weekend with Sophia Viviano (Gonzaga University) tallying twice on Saturday to push the lead to three in the second half to give the Shadow command, and adding a third on Sunday to kick off the scoring nine minutes in, finishing off a corner from Marissa Mykines (Illinois / Mead HS #), who had three assists on the day.

Sam Heilman (Gonzaga University) also scored twice in a match with two in the second half Sunday, and Havana Johnson (McNeese State / Lake City HS #) tallied once in each match. Similar to Mykines, Gaby Kennedy (CC Spokane / Lewis & Clark HS #) also set up three goals this weekend.

On Sunday, Chloe Gellhaus (Seattle Pacific / East Valley HS #) scored the second goal of the game. She was one of four players from the club's Spokane Sounders G2001 squad that just returned from a stellar performance at US Youth Soccer's Far West Regionals. The foursome contributed significantly in the contest despite sweeping their group without allowing a goal in their games Monday through Wednesday before a heartbreaking 4-3 quarterfinal exit Friday in their fourth game in five days.

The results keep the Shadow in the hunt for the postseason, which has essentially narrowed to a three-team race with only a few games remaining. They are tied with defending WPSL champion Seattle Sounders Women with a 5-1-0 record and 15 points, but need the champs to drop a point as they hold the tiebreaker with a win in their meeting earlier this season on the west side.

The Shadow wrap up their campaign on the road next week with a trip to face a pair of opponents Saturday and Sunday. They will play OSA XF Saturday at 7:30 and PacNW Sunday at 2:00 - both games at Renton Memorial Stadium.

Community Support: Courtesy of Northern Capital Management, the leading sponsor for the Women's First Team, all of the regular season WPSL Spokane Shadow matches will be free for attending fans. NCM is the first of many new area businesses and organizations supporting the women's team this year. They are joined by: MultiCare Rockwood Integrated Sports Medicine, Clearwater Summit Group, Lyte Balance, BECU and Spokane Sports Commission.
