Shadow open EPLWA title defense Sunday in Wenatchee

Coach Chad Brown announces roster for opening match of the 2015 season

Spokane Shadow News Release - Friday, May 2, 2015

The reigning Evergreen Premier League champion Spokane Shadow take to the field for the first time Sunday in their bid to defend the league championship, travelling to face Wenatchee FC at Wenatchee Valley CC at 6:00.

The Shadow swept the Capitals a year ago, posting a 3-2 victory in Wenatchee in late May and then blanking them 3-0 on the final day of the season to give Spokane the inaugural EPLWA championship.

Now available per NCAA rules, a number of Gonzaga players will be joining the squad, among them being returning player Graison Le. Highlighting the group, though, is Spokane standout Zach Hamer. The Mead High School product finished his career with the Bulldogs as a WCC All-Conference honorable mention selection and played in the USL Premier Development League the past two summers for North Sound Seawolves and Portland Timbers U23s.

Helping lead the defense will be former Shadow PDL goalkeeper Jeff Srock. The current CC Spokane goalkeeping coach helped lead Whitworth to a league title in his collegiate career that also included time with Gonzaga University and CC Spokane, where he helped the Bigfoot reach the 2007 league final.

About the Opposition: Wenatchee FC

The Capitals kicked off their season last week with a road trip to Everett, where they lost 2-1 to the Stars. The hosts led by two within the opening half-hour with Wenatchee getting on the board through Josh Alvarez, the leading scorer of the NWAC last fall while playing for Wenatchee Valley College. The loss proved extra costly as they will be missing two players this week due to red cards. Midfielder Julio Vera was cautioned twice and goalkeeper Mauricio Sanchez was red-carded after the game.

FIRST Home Game – Saturday, May 9 vs Seattle Stars

The Shadow will open their home slate against the Stars next week against Seattle Stars. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm at Spokane Falls CC Stadium with family-friendly tailgating beginning at 5:00 pm.
