Shadow Grab Shutout Wins in NPSL, EPLWA

Sunday, June 17, 2018

A goal and assist from Mike Ramos along with a fourth shutout of the season from Bryan Hernandez propelled the Shadow First Team to a 2-0 victory against FCM Portland in a first-place showdown in the NPSL Northwest Sunday at Spokane Falls CC Stadium. The Shadow U23s followed that up with a 3-0 victory against Olympic Force to move back into a tie for first in the EPLWA Columbia Division.

The Shadow controlled their second meeting of the weekend against Portland and snatched the lead in the 34th minute when Mike Ramos converted a penalty.

In the second half the Shadow battled the wind and a compact FCM defense, but finally broke through in the 76th for some insurance when Ramos found Tanner Williams inside the box. Williams beat the keeper to the ball at the penalty spot to put the hosts up two.

From there Hernandez and the defense managed the game to keep the clean sheet that eluded them the day before in a 1-1 draw in which the visitors equalized on a deflected shot.

The victory moves Spokane, still unbeaten after eight games, into sole possession of first in the NPSL Northwest with a 4-0-4 record. The Shadow host the other Portland side, PDX FC, for a pair of games next week, hosting them Saturday at SFCC at 5:00 and again Sunday at the Polo Grounds at 1:00.

The second match of the doubleheader the Shadow U23s were off to a flying start with a shot from Denis Kalamar that rang off the post in the opening minute. It was a short time later that Drew Williams put the hosts on the board. The striker intercepted a back pass and finished for an early lead nine minutes in.

The Shadow controlled the contest, though the visiting Force were able to create some anxious moments at the other end for goalkeeper Carter Auth, who finished with the shutout.

Another quick goal in the second half put Spokane up two when Colin Shockman quickly fired a diagonal ball from the right side of midfield to Cade Roske behind the back line. Roske deftly first-timed the ball off the bounce over the keeper from outside the box for a two-goal lead in the 47th.

The Shadow left no doubt in the final minutes when Devin Hauenstein took the ball up the right side and sent a low box cross through the area to Enzo Nalis for an easy finish from about 10 yards with about three minutes of regulation remaining.

The Shadow U23s wrap up their home slate next week with a Saturday evening contest against Washington Premier (formerly South Sound), who are one of the leading teams in the league. The game is the second of a doubleheader Saturday at SFCC with kick-off set for 7:30.
