B99-A Win President's Cup Regional Match!

Representing the state of Washington in Boys U13 Division 1, SSC Shadow B99-A is competing in Boise this week in the 2013 Presidents Cup Regionals. The team beat Wasatch SC Fury (Utah) 2-1 today, fell 0-1 to WAFC America (Oregon) yesterday and face Cal North teams MCL Briceno 99 tomorrow. The team, coached by Matt Leonard, won the 2013 Washington Youth Soccer Challenge Cup in May, which advanced them to the President's Cup Regional. Go SSC Shadow!

MOSES LAKE - Soccer has been 17-year-old Jessie Green's passion since she scored her first goal at the age of 4. Green, now a junior at Moses Lake High School, plays for one of the most prestigious soccer clubs in Washington, SSC Shadow Elite in Spokane.

SSC Shadow G96-A Win 2013 Championship Cup!

SSC Shadow made State Cup and eastern Washington youth soccer history this weekend as 6 high school girls teams competed in Semi-final matches at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila on Saturday and won! All advanced to the Finals on Sunday. With 4 teams in the Championship Cup (Washington Youth Soccer’s most competitive tournament) and 2 teams in the Challenge Cup (the competitive-level State Cup tournament), no other club in eastern Washington has ever advanced so many teams to a Semi-final/Final State Cup weekend!

Players from these 6 SSC Shadow teams represent 17 high schools: Central Valley, Cheney, Deer Park, East Valley, Ferris, Freeman, Gonzaga Prep, Lakeside, Lewis and Clark, Mead, Moses Lake, Mt. Spokane, Post Falls, Richland, Sandpoint, University and West Valley.

In the Final round on Sunday, SSC Shadow G96-A, coached by George Hageage, won the Championship Cup crown with a 2-1 victory over Eastside FC Girls 96 Red! The team will advance and represent the state of Washington at the 2013 Region IV Far West Championships in Honolulu, HI, June 17-23.

Connor Gu Named WIAA Athlete of the Week!

Connor Gu, SSC Shadow B95-A and Lewis and Clark High School, was honored as WIAA Athlete of the Week for Week 35. Gu scored goals in each of the Tigers’ loser-out playoff matches last week. Lewis and Clark beat Mead, 2-1, Gonzaga Prep, 1-0, and Central Valley, 2-1. Congratulations, Connor!

Sean Bushéy Resigns to Join Colorado Rush

Whitworth University Men’s Soccer Head Coach and SSC Shadow Technical Director Sean Bushéy has announced his resignation and plans to join the Colorado Rush as Senior Academy Director of Coaching. The SSC Shadow Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Abbas Faridnia will replace Bushéy as SSC Shadow Technical Director.  

"Sean is a true ambassador for the sport and we appreciate his passionate commitment to building a quality, premier youth soccer program in Spokane. During his tenure he has built a tremendous organization of talent and elevated SSC Shadow to one of the top six clubs in the state," said SSC Shadow Board President Wayne Butler. He added, "Abbas has lent his expertise, tireless enthusiasm and has been a key component to our success. With Abbas’ leadership and our talented coaching depth, we’re excited and confident about the future of our club."

SSC Shadow’s Class of 2013 girl’s teams participate in Division 2 of the Washington Youth Soccer Regional Club League and have won notable tournaments over their years of club soccer. Most recently, the Girls ’94 U18-Philp team, coached by Dan Philp, won the 2012 Pleasanton Rage Showcase and were 2012 Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup Semi-finalists. Coached by Kevin Moon, the Girls ’94 U18-Moon team won the 2012 Washington Youth Soccer Challenge Cup and went on to a Semi-Final finish at the 2012 Region IV President’s Cup in Denver last June.

Several players were honored with All-Conference and All-State honors for their contributions to fall, 2012 area high school girls soccer.

Challenge Cup Quarterfinal Finish for B96-A!

A great effort by our SSC Shadow B96-A team, coached by Brandon Schreiner, fell a bit short Sunday in the quarterfinal round of the Washington Youth Soccer 2013 Challenge Cup, with a 0-1 loss to WSA Arsenal. SSC Shadow won their preliminary round bracket and advanced farther in the tournament than any other eastern Washington team. We congratulate them and all of our high school boys teams on successful premier RCL seasons!

James Charette of Washington Youth Soccer serves as Director of Coaching Education. On Monday, he presented to our RCL and Select coaching staff, discussing his recent trip to Barcelona and Valencia and shedding light on the new methodology of US Soccer licensing and coaching education program. 25 coaches were in attendance.

“James’ presentation was enlightening and enjoyable,” said Technical Director Sean Bushey. “He sets the standard in so many ways; we are thankful to have him present to our coaching staff. They are eager to learn and strive to be better coaches in order to better serve our players. Our coaching staff is the most soccer educated (Licensed and experienced) staff in greater Spokane, and we strive to keep learning.

For the past two summers, Frans Hoek, current Holland National Team Goalkeeper Coach, has held summer workshops for SSC Shadow coaches. Multiple coaching clinics, lead by our Technical Director and Director of Coaching, have also been held throughout the year.

Kelcie Hedge (SSC Shadow G96-A & Post Falls High School), named Idaho Player of the Year in girl's soccer, and Riley Richardson (SSC Shadow G94-Moon & Mt. Spokane High School), the leading scorer for Mt. Spokane's State 3A finalist girl's soccer team, were nominated for the Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcasters Junior Female Athlete Award. Annie Pokorny - former Shadow player - wins U.S. National Cross Country Skiing Championship

Annie Pokorny won the "collegiate cup" as the top female college athlete at the U.S. National Cross Country Skiing Championship Jan. 8 at Soldier Hollow, UT. Pokorney competed for our Shadow Girls ’93 Premier soccer team for several years prior to her decision to focus on skiiing, spending many evenings at soccer practice and then heading to Mt. Spokane for cross country skiing training. Annie is a sophomore at Middlebury College and has qualified to ski for the U.S. at the World U-23 championships in Liberic, Czech Republic, in late January. Congratulations and good luck, Annie!

Kelsey Turnbow selected for US Youth Soccer 2013 National Development Camp

US Youth Soccer’s Region IV Olympic Development Program has selected SSC Shadow G97-A player Kelsey Turnbow for the Jan. 29-Feb. 3, 2013, National Development Camp for Girls ‘99 players in Phoenix, AZ. Turnbow, an 8th grader from Liberty Lake, will attend Central Valley High School next fall. She is 1 of 2 players from Washington and 1 of 18 players in her age group from California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Hawaii, Nevada and Arizona to receive the invitation.

National Camps are held throughout the year at various locations in the United States. The U.S. National Team Coach or a National Staff Coach is present at these events to observe, train, and identify players for placement in the national pool or on a national team. Players are evaluated on the four components that make up a soccer player:
1. Technique
2. Tactics
3. Fitness and Athletic Ability
4. Psychological Component (attitude)

“Kelsey is constantly working to improve her game and deserves the reward she has received,” said her SSC Shadow coach, Abbas Faridnia. “Best of wishes to Kelsey in Phoenix!" SSC Shadow congratulates its players from the Mt. Spokane High School Girl’s and St. George’s Boy’s soccer teams who reached the state finals: Alyssa Lloyd, Riley Richardson, Sydney Nelson, Annie Shellerud, Madison Boyd, Megan Nilsson and Whitney Weaver from Mt. Spokane (20-1-0) for the 3A Girls State Championship and from St. Georges (17-3), Peter Worrall and Stow Miller in the Class 1B/2B state championship.

Sean Bushey Honored as 2012 Northwest Conference Coach of the Year!

Whitworth Men’s Soccer Head Coach (and SSC Shadow Technical Director) Sean Bushey was named 2012 NW Conference Coach of the Year, based on voting by his fellow conference coaches. This is the fifth time in his 17 year Whitworth career he has received this honor, winning in 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2008. "On behalf of our entire club membership, I want to offer resounding and heartfelt congratulations to Sean in receiving this top honor," stated SSC Shadow Board President Wayne Butler. "Whether it be coaching our kids or training the coaches, Sean is a consummate professional and gifted leader; we’re fortunate to have him at the helm of our organization. Well done Sean!"

Central Valley wins 4A District Girls Soccer Title

SSC Shadow congratulates the Central Valley Bears on winning the 4A District Girls Soccer title with a 3-1 win over the Mead Panthers. Matter of Fact: Soccer IS a Legitimate Sport

For as long as American sports fans can remember soccer has been put down, beat down and trashed as a sport for kids. The harshest critics
call it an activity for those wanna-be athletes who weren’t good enough to play a real sport like football, baseball or basketball.  

SWX’s Chauncey Jones admits he used to be one of those guys. But not anymore.   Soccer - in the Inland Northwest at least - has grown in popularity over the past several years. Seeing Richland native Hope Solo rise to stardom in the women’s World Cup hasn’t hurt. Watching the Seattle Sounders draw nearly 40,000 for every match has helped too, if not further signified soccer’s arrival.  

Then there are the thousands - yes, thousands - of kids who play soccer in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. Hundreds of them play at the highest competitive level available.   Is soccer a kids’ sport? Yes it is. And they, as they reach young adulthood and beyond, are carrying on the tradition and bringing soccer into the mainstream of American sports life.
