Homegrown Shadow Kick Off National Playoffs Saturday at 7:00 at SFCC

Friday, July 6, 2018

The Spokane Shadow First Team take the field Saturday evening at Spokane Falls CC Stadium with well-known foe FCM Portland in the West Region Quarterfinals of the National Premier Soccer League playoffs looking to continue their unbeaten campaign. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm.

For the first time since the team was founded in 1995, the Shadow finished the season without a loss during the regular season - quite an accomplishment for a team history that includes two recent Evergreen Premier League championships and five regular season USL PDL Northwest Division titles from 1996-2005.

As the champion in the Northwest, the Shadow will face runner-up FCM Portland for a fourth time this season, having previously played them to a 2-2 road draw, a 1-1 home tie and a 2-0 win at home. Mike Ramos and Tanner Williams each have two goals against Portland this season, each tallying in the two-goal rally for the first tie and once again in the 2-0 win. Leading scorer Chase Reidt scored the opening goal in the 1-1 draw.

1) Homegrown Accomplishment

The team this year has been led by a significant contribution from homegrown players that have played in the club. The attack, in particular, bears that out statistically with 25 of the 33 goals scored coming from former club players. Chase Reidt leads the way with seven goals and is followed by Karl Muelheims (5), Mike Ramos (5) and Jake Levine (5), who was honored earlier this year as the league's National Player of the Week. Ramos also boasts six assists this season in NPSL play, which is only bested by Jesse Retan's seven making the homegrown tally of assists 19 of the 29 tallied this season.

2) Local Leaders

Helping round out the homegrown talent are also quite a few local players that have been leaders on the team. Sandpoint product Tanner Williams is a leading scoring threat with four goals and five assists and several locally-based college players have been key defensively, starting with the centerback duo of Garrett Wilson (Gonzaga) and Spencer Wolfe (Whitworth), who is a longtime member of the team and the current captain.

3) Award Winners

In addition to Levine earning the league's Player of the Week award this year, several players have also been recognized by various media this year on Team of the Week lists with Spencer Wolfe and JD Michael making the latest edition this week from ISNsoccer.com. Previously recognized by ISNsoccer have been Karl Muelheims, Noah Chapleski and Jake Levine. Top Drawer Soccer's similar Team of the Week lists have recognized Spencer Wolfe, Karl Muelheims, Bryan Hernandez and Jake Levine.
