Four Spokane Sounders teams are in the hunt for championships this weekend in the State and President's Cups, including a pair of 2005 Boys sides that will square off against one another in the semifinals, ensuring at least one will be playing again for the title on Sunday. Four other sides are in the knockout phase this weekend, looking to advance to the Final Four next weekend.
Final Four action at Starfire...
Sounders B04-A -- U13 State Cup
Tight contests have been the theme of the tournament for the side with 1-1, 1-0 and 1-1 results in group play, and the trend continued for the lads in the quarterfinal on Friday in Tri-Cities. They battled Three Rivers to a 1-1 stalemate, but advanced via penalties with a 4-1 decision in the tiebreaker. They will meet up with another eastern Washington foe in the semifinals with a showdown with Crossfire Yakima at 12:30. Champions of the RCL U13 in the fall, the Spokane Sounders boys finished second to newcomer Crossfire Yakima in the Winter RCL League with a narrow 1-0 road loss in their lone meeting. The Championship is scheduled for 10:15 Sunday.
Sounders G03-A -- U14 President's Cup Division 1
The young ladies completed their nearly perfect run through group play with a fourth shutout in four games Saturday, dominating Snohomish United on the road for a 5-0 victory. The only blemish, if you can call it that, was a scoreless draw against Seattle United earlier in the month. On Saturday, they will face Eastside FC in the semifinal at 4:30. The two sides previously met in the RCL fall campaign in the U14 Division 3 league in which the Spokane Sounders finished second and Eastside fourth. The two meetings were very tight with Eastside prevailing 1-0 at home in the first and the two finishing 1-1 in Spokane in the second. The championship is scheduled for 12:15 Sunday.
Sounders B05 North-A / Sounders B05 Valley-A -- President's Cup Division 2
After escaping a Round of 16 thriller by penalties, the North side picked up another victory on the road in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 result against Eastside FC on Saturday. The Valley boys, having also won via penalties in the Round of 16, also picked up a big win on the road, advancing with a commanding 4-1 win against Harbor Premier in their quarterfinal match, setting up an all-Spokane Sounders semifinal in Tukwila. The match is set for 2:30 on Saturday with the winner playing at 2:30 on Sunday. Oddly, the two teams in the other semifinal are the other sides that advanced from their respective groups in the 27-team event. The North side's Group B winner PacNW is facing the Valley's Group C winner Seattle United. The North played to a 2-2 draw against PacNW at Plantes Ferry at the beginning of the month while the Valley boys' only defeat came against Seattle United.
Other Knockout Phase Contests...
Sounders G98-A -- U19/20 State Cup
The young ladies wrapped up group play Sunday with another big win, downing NorthWest United 3-0 at SFCC to finish group play with an aggregate scoreline of 15-1 over three matches. On Sunday they play host to FWFC at Plantes Ferry in the quarterfinals at 2:00.
Sounders G02-A -- U15 State Cup
Unfortunately, a 2-0 loss Sunday against Crossfire Premier at SFCC in their final group match put the young ladies on the road for the quarterfinals. They visit Blackhills FC Sunday.
Sounders G00-B -- U17 President's Cup Division 1
In a tight contest Saturday, the young ladies finished in a 1-1 stalemate with Eastside FC at DMC. They advanced to the quarterfinals, though, as the group winner and play host to CFS Sunday at noon at Plantes Ferry.
Sounders G00-C -- U17 President's Cup Division 2
Despite a second loss in group play, 2-1 to visiting GS Surf, on Saturday, the girls will continue to play, traveling to play Southlake Select on Sunday.
Sounders G04-B -- U13 President's Cup Division 2
The young ladies saw their campaign come to a close in a narrow 1-0 heartbreaker on the road against Washington Rush Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Sounders B04-B -- U13 President's Cup Division 2
On the road for a third consecutive week, the boys were unable to register an upset, falling a 2-1 decision against WPFC Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Sounders G99-A -- U18 State Cup
The team finally took to the field last weekend, but were unable to post a W. They tied GS Surf 1-1 and then fell 3-1 to Crossfire Premier. They wrap things up on the road Sunday at Washington Rush with an outside shot of advancing if Crossfire Premier also defeats group leader GS Surf.
Sounders G00-A -- U17 State Cup
Eight goals in two road games would be enough to get at least one victory most times, but the young ladies have found themselves in goalfests all three contests in the tournament. They found themselves on the short side, unfortunately, in both matches on the weekend with a 5-4 loss at Whatcom and a 6-4 defeat against PacNW after opening with a 4-3 win two weeks prior. They are still in the thick of the race for one of the two berths from the group, though, and play host to last-place Three Rivers Sunday at SFCC.
Sounders G01-A -- U16 State Cup
After a three-week break, the young ladies return to action Sunday to host Eastside FC at SFCC in a showdown of the top two in the group. They have literally been perfect through three games with three shutout wins, clinching a spot in the semifinals.
Sounders G01-B -- U16 President's Cup
The tournament came to a close for the girls, who were unable to come up with a win in two contests in one day. They played Kitsap Alliance to a scoreless draw in the afternoon Saturday and returned to the pitch several hours later in a 2-0 defeat against NorthWest United to wrap up group play.
Sounders G01-C -- U16 President's Cup Division 2
A pair of group play losses at home concluded their tournament this weekend. The fell to Pacific FC Saturday and were narrowly edged out 1-0 by Seattle United on Sunday.
Sounders G02-B -- U15 President's Cup Division 2
After opening with a 2-1 loss the week prior against eventual group winner Rush Select, the young ladies bounced back with big 10-0 and 4-1 wins at Newport Saturday and against visiting Eastside FC Sunday, respectively, to finish second in the group. Unfortunately, it was not enough to secure a wildcard for the quarterfinals 27-team event, ending their run in the tournament.
Sounders G04-A -- U13 State Cup
The tournament came to a close for the girls with a loss to Eastside FC Sunday in their final group match.
