Kellie Zakrzewski is GNAC Player of the Week

October 11, 2010

Freshman forward Kellie Zakrzewski (Cheney HS; Shadow Class of 2010), who netted a pair of goals Saturday in Seattle Pacific’s victory at Central Washington, received the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week award for women’s soccer on Monday.

Zakrzewski converted two second-half breakaway opportunities to cap the Falcons 5-1 win at CWU. SPU avenged a disappointing 3-1 setback in last season’s visit to Ellensburg.

A product of Cheney (Wash.) High School, Zakrzewski took over the team scoring lead with her fourth and fifth collegiate goals. She received a through pass from Brandi Hamre and sent a 15-yard strike into the goal at 64:53. Just 2:37 later, Zakrzewski broke past two Wildcats defenders and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one at 67:30.

She tops all goal scorers during GNAC games as all five of Zakrzewski’s goals came during conference contests. Those five goals rank third overall among the league’s scoring leaders.

Zakrzewski is the third Falcon to be honored this year with the weekly GNAC honor. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson was the Sept. 13 Player of the Week and sophomore midfielder Brittany Langdon won the Sept. 20 award.

Defending GNAC champion Seattle Pacific (8-1-2) completed the first half of the conference campaign with a 5-1-1 record to tie for first place with Western Washington.

Zakrzewski and the SPU women continue GNAC play at home against Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. That is the second game of a soccer doubleheader at Interbay Stadium as the SPU men meet 21st-ranked Grand Canyon at 4:30 p.m.
