Shadow Women roll in 7-2 win; Men fall 4-1

The Shadow Women's First Team posted another big home win Saturday night at Spokane Falls CC Stadium to maintain their lead in the Northwest Premier League, downing visiting Fuerza FC 7-2 on the night. The Men's First Team, meanwhile, dropped a 4-1 contest to visiting Bellingham, who was third in the table going into the evening.

In the opening match of the doubleheader Sarah Cox (pictured above center) put her stamp on the game in the early going, hitting from distance just 70 seconds into the match. The well-driven 20-yard was low and proved too tough for goalkeeper Mikaela Powers to handle as it squirted through her hands and into goal.

The visitors, though, put up a bit of a fight and answered back in the 14th minute when Courtney Arnold finished nicely from inside the box. League-leading scorer Megan Lindsay, however, restored the lead three minutes later on a ball from Marissa Mykines (pictured right), who had another excellent game. It was her second assist of the contest.

In the 20th minute Maia Angell got in the box and corralled a loose bouncing ball to send it inside the left post to push the advantage to two. Spokane's control continued with two more before the break with Cox cleaning up a corner in the 29, ripping the shot from 22 yards past the keeper, and defender Taryn Miller scoring on a free kick in the 37th. The center back launched a ball from 45 yards into the box, but the wind grabbed it and carried it in just under the bar and over the keeper's reach.

Kasey Rubosky scored on a nice strike in the 62nd and Mykines capped her solid performance with a long-range tally in the 89th. Fuerza's second goal came in the 63rd on a penalty converted by McKenzie Buell after a foul in the middle of the box.

In the second half of the doubleheader the roles were reversed. Bellingham made a quick impression with a goal on a corner just 49 seconds into the match when the left side delivery from Thiago Novis was nodded in near post by Kyle Witzel.

The first half would continue to be a wild one with Spokane having numerous chances and both teams hitting the bar. In the 18th minute a Matt Beaulaurier free kick from the left side was flicked in the center of the box to Brady Ulen at the right post, but Bellingham keeper Tyler Visten got to the post just in time to deny the equalizer. Three minutes later on a counter Bellingham's Kurtis Pederson ripped a 21 yard effort that smacked off the crossbar and two minutes later the Shadow suffered the same fate. Zach Hamer sent the ball into the box where Michael Mollay (pictured) collided with he keeper in the race to get it. Anthony Mota got to the loose ball only to see his effort go off the woodwork.

Mollay, however, two minutes later would tie things up by sending a low shot from near the top of the box to the left of the keeper in the 25th minute.

Bellingham, though, struck two blows just before the half that allowed them to take command of the match going into the second half.

In the 43rd minute another corner put the Hammers back in front when Novis' delivery from the left went long to Jeremiah Lee, who's header back into the six was nodded home by Nick Ulowetz.

About 30 seconds into stoppage time Witzel found Kurtis Pedersen for a strike inside the box to give Bellingham a two-goal lead at the intermission.

The visitors added some more insurance in the 63rd when Novis went on a run down the right side and sent a perfect ball into the area near the six that Witzel drove home with a diving header.
