Shadow First Teams host rival Yakima Saturday at SFCC
Doubleheader celebrates SYSA Night with free entry for youth wearing SYSA jersey

Friday, May 27, 2016

The Spokane Shadow First Teams will face an opponent for the second time early in the season, playing host to Yakima United this Saturday at Spokane Falls CC Stadium. The ladies host the Hoppers at 4:00 pm in NWPL action while the two EPLWA sides collide at 6:30.  Tickets for the doubleheader are $10 for Adults, $7 for Children 15 and under.

Shadow WFT vs Yakima United Hoppers  – 4:00

The Shadow ladies kicked off their inaugural season with a 5-2 victory over Yakima on May 1. Megan Lindsay recorded the league’s first-ever hat-trick in the contest, tallying three times in the first half. Marissa Mykines also scored in the opening half and Sarah Cox added the fifth in the second period. Yakima scored two in the second half.

Since then, the Shadow women added a pair of one-sided results to the win column before falling in the second of a two-game trip to South Sound two weeks ago against a fresh Shock side that had not played the day prior.

Among the newcomers to the squad for this week’s contest are four local area players that are current high school or recent standouts in the area. Goalkeeper Ashlyn Juul returns from a freshman season at Northwest University and Taryn Miller is back from her debut year at Montana. They will join the college-bound duo of Maia Angell and Larkin Russell.

At the other end of the spectrum is the return to the field of Jael Hagerott. The current Shadow and former Whitworth coach has finally been convinced and agreed to lace up the boots once more.

Shadow MFT vs Yakima United Hoppers – 6:30

The men’s side returns to action after an idle week that followed a two-game trip to the west side in which they defeated Olympic, 3-0, and South Sound 3-2.  The two sides set to meet Saturday were not able to get the better of one another in the season opener on the first of the month, playing to a scoreless draw. Ray Ruano posted the shutout for the Shadow.

Most of the group that posted the two recent road victories return to the lineup for Week 5 of the league season. Among them are goalkeeper Tony Watters and defender Fernando Alvarez. The pair were honored as EPLWA Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week for their performance on the trip. The lone newcomer suiting up this week will be midfielder Eric Espinoza of Whitworth.

Spokane-Yakima is a rivalry that dates back to as early as 1996 and the days playing in the USL Premier Development League. The Shadow and Reds, as they were previously known, quickly became heated foes on the pitch and it picked up right where it left off when the two joined EPLWA. Yakima won the first meeting, 3-2 on the road in Week 2 of the 2014 season, but has been winless against the Shadow since. Spokane won 1-0 in the return match at Yakima that season and swept the Hoppers last year 2-0 and 2-1.

Third Annual SYSA Night

The Shadow doubleheader celebrates SSC Shadow partner Spokane Youth Sports Association for the third consecutive year. All kids wearing an SYSA jersey receive free entry to the matches on Saturday evening at SFCC and will receive free cheer sticks at the gate to help cheer on the Shadow.
