SPOKANE SHADOW NEWS RELEASE -- Saturday, May 16, 2015
Despite a hard-fought effort from the hosts, the Spokane Shadow were unable to find the back of the net on a rainy evening at Spokane Falls CC Stadium, dropping a 2-0 contest to the Vancouver Victory, who used a goal in each half to move back atop the Evergreen Premier League table.
The visitors took the lead 10 minutes before the intermission when a long ball into midfield resulted in a couple of headers that sent it up near the Shadow penalty area before it finally came down in the middle of a mix of players. In the scrum to get possession of it, Borce Antanasov was able to get to it first and fired a shot that deflected en route to goal, causing Shadow goalkeeper Jeff Srock to have to adjust to the path of the well-paced effort. The keeper was only able to get a piece of it, and all anyone could do was watch as it looped behind him and rolled over the line.
In a contest in which both teams had periods of control in possession of the ball, the second half became about the critical next score, which looked like it would be the deciding tally of the game. The visitors would prevail on that front, and with the help of a local standout making his return to the area.
Defender James Williamson, formerly of the Coeur d’Alene Sting and Lake City HS, created the winning strike with a throw-in about 45 yards from goal on the right side. His ball bounced several times on the way toward goal, skipping passed many players before finding Alex Nimo at the far post for the finish from about five yards in the 78th minute.
For the Shadow, Zach Hamer returned to the lineup and combined well with Karl Muelheims on the night in the attack. Muelheims had the best chances for the Shadow on the evening only to see his handful of shots just miss the mark. At the other end, Srock had a eye-opening performance with a number of quality stops, including one on a Vancouver breakaway in which he made a great save to keep the Shadow in the contest.
“They came in and did their job and we weren't good enough on doing ours. With that said, its part of the process,” said Shadow head coach Chad Brown. “It's early on and we're in a better spot than we were last year at this time, so we got work to do. We'll continue to work hard and focus on guys getting better every day. We'll take the positives and negatives out of and sift through it, and move on.
“I think that we defended fairly well at times in terms of philosophy and what we are trying to do with tactics. Its just making sure we are sharper in all aspects, but I think the majority guys fought for the entire game, even after going down two goals, which is a positive. It's just trying to find that character and build that character.
“There's a lot of new guys, and the whole group still hasn't trained together yet, so there's plenty of positives to take out it because we haven't trained together. I don't think that that's necessarily an excuse, but its part of that dynamic of being successful - the camaraderie and chemistry of a group.”
