Shadow First Teams doubleheader at Albi Saturday, Men at SFCC Sunday
Return to Joe Albi Stadium highlights weekend homestand

Friday, June 3, 2016

The Spokane Shadow First Teams will make a rare appearance at Joe Albi Stadium Saturday, June 4 in a doubleheader against the Olympic Force followed by a solo Men’s First Team match Sunday, June 5 at Spokane Falls CC Stadium against Wenatchee FC. On Saturday, the ladies host the Force at 4:00 pm in NWPL action while the two EPLWA sides collide at 6:30.  The Men’s FT game Sunday versus Wenatchee will kick off at 4:00.  Tickets for are $10 for Adults, $7 for Children 15 and under.

Saturday’s doubleheader will mark the first time the Shadow have played at Joe Albi Stadium since the USL PDL team ceased operations after the 2005 season due to field conditions of the previous turf surface. The team won numerous PDL titles at Albi and played host to the league’s Final Four championship event in 1999 as well as several exhibitions against professional clubs.

“We are excited about a return to our old stomping grounds where so much history was made with players like current Men’s First Team head coach Chad Brown and future Major League Soccer stars Craig Waibel and Brian Ching, who also played for the US National Team, wearing the sky kit for the Shadow,” said First Teams General Manager Gerald Barnhart. “Spokane Falls has been a great new home for us with its intimate setting and improved facility, but there is so much history steeped for the team at Albi that its great to be there once again.”

The doubleheader on Saturday is part of a Kick-Off celebration for SSC Shadow, which started a new calendar year on the youth side of the club with training sessions starting on the first of the month. Players U11 and up will be participating in a Jamboree at neighboring Dwight Merkel Sports Complex beginning at noon and then joining the Shadow as part of the crowd in the evening to cheer on the First Teams as the men look to further their bid for a three-peat and the women’s efforts to claim the inaugural NWPL title.

The Shadow will wrap up another season series against an opponent early in the season with the Force coming to town. Spokane previously played at Olympic three weeks ago in the first half of a two-game trip.

SATURDAY: Shadow WFT vs Olympic Force  – 4:00 @ Joe Albi Stadium

On a damp evening in Bremerton, the Shadow got off to a great start with four goals in the first 33 minutes of the first-ever meeting between the two sides en route to a 9-2 victory. Tiara Pittman-Thomas scored two of the first four goals and in the second half Karley Baggerly netted three. Tasha Luu also scored twice with Sarah Cox and Megan Lindsay having scored the opening two goals in the ninth and 16th minutes.

SATURDAY: Shadow MFT vs Olympic – 6:30 @ Joe Albi Stadium

The Shadow took some time to finally break through as their scoring frustrations from goalless performances in the first two games of the season continued well into the first half. A penalty four minutes before the intermission was converted by Michael Mollay for the first Shadow goal of the campaign and defender Fernando Alvarez netted from the spot as well in the 58th to double the advantage. Alvarez put the match out of doubt five minutes from time with his second goal.

Olympic are currently 1-3-1 on the season with a 1-0 loss at South Sound and a 3-3 draw against Seattle Stars since their last meeting. Last year the Shadow won 3-0 at Olympic and capped the season with a championship celebration, having already clinched the title, in the season finale with a 5-1 victory over the visiting Force.

SUNDAY: Shadow MFT vs Wenatchee – 4:00 @ Spokane Falls CC Stadium

The Shadow will see Wenatchee for the first time this season on Sunday. The Capitals come into the contest with a 1-3-0 record. Their lone win was against central Washington foe Yakima. Last season the Shadow won 8-2 on the road and 2-1 at home against Wenatchee to remain perfect against the Capitals. In 2014, Spokane squeaked out a 3-2 road win midseason and used a 3-0 victory at home in the very last game of EPLWA’s inaugural season to capture the title.

Coming Up Next

The Shadow remain at home for two more weeks with a doubleheader June 11 versus Seattle Stars and then host the duo of Fuerza FC and Bellingham United on June 18 in another doubleheader. All four games will be at Spokane Falls CC Stadium.
