Spokane to face 2014 championship race foe South Sound in first leg of two-game trip
SPOKANE SHADOW NEWS RELEASE - Friday, June 5, 2015
The defending Evergreen Premier League champion Spokane Shadow return to the road for the first time since their season opener a month ago in Wenatchee, travelling to the west side of the state on its first two-game trip of the 2015 campaign. The club will face South Sound at 1:00 pm at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood on Saturday and then play a rare morning contest Sunday at 9:30 am versus Olympic Force at Gordon Field in Bremerton.
A year ago, the Spokane Shadow started off slow, but used a draw at South Sound to spark the start of a 12-game unbeaten run in which they never took the field as league leaders, but claimed the league title by one point over South Sound with a win on the final day. On Saturday, they face a Shock team certain to be looking to avenge last year’s head-to-head results and championship race result.
Sunday’s contest versus Olympic will be a league first as no game has ever kicked off in the morning. Through two seasons, it will be the only fixture to have started prior to 1:00 pm.
Goalkeepers Tony Watters (pictured) and Joe Scott will have their first shot at starting this weekend as current EPLWA Defensive Player of the Week selection Jeff Srock is not available for the first of the two games on the road. Watters, heading into his sophomore year at Whitworth this fall, has been sharing the starting duties for the Pirates. He previously saw action this season, playing the second half in the Shadow’s 8-2 win at Wenatchee and keeping the Capitals off the board. Joe Scott, in his second year in the Shadow goalkeeping pool, moved to MSU-Billings last fall after spending his freshman year at Concordia.
About the Opposition: South Sound Shock
In their first meeting last year (May 18), South Sound took the initial lead on a goal from Danny Minetti at the half-hour mark, but Spokane tied it up with six minutes left on a goal from Nick Hamer. In Spokane (June 21), the Shadow snared a narrow 1-0 win on a goal from Graison Le with eight minutes remaining. Andrew Glaeser posted the shutout.
Currently, the Shock are one of two unbeaten teams left in the league at 5-0-1, trailing 6-0-0 Vancouver by two points. The Shock lead the league in goals with 23 on the campaign thus far, but the scoring is spread out among the team. Leading the way, however, is Tyler John with four goals and Vince McCluskey with three. In a league that has only had seven shutouts, Chris Kintz is the only netminder with two to his credit.
About the Opposition: Olympic Force
New to the league as replacements for WestSound in the same market, the 1-5-0 Force got off to a very slow start to the season, but have shown some spirit of late. They picked up their first win two weeks ago on the road against Seattle Stars and followed it up last week with another good outing on the road, rallying from three down in Yakima only to come up short in a thrilling 6-5 contest. Nine different players have scored their 11 goals.
Coming Up – Home Game – June 13
The Shadow returns home for the first of two games on consecutive Saturdays. On June 13 the team plays host to South Sound in the second half of the season series. The evening is Referee Appreciation Night with area referees receiving free admission by showing their official patch.
