SPOKANE SHADOW NEWS RELEASE -- Friday, June 6, 2014
Undefeated on the road through three games, the Shadow head to Tukwila Saturday to face the Seattle Stars for the first time this season Saturday at 5:00 pm at the Starfire Sports Complex.
As the seventh game of the season for the 3-2-1 Shadow, the match marks the completion of the first half of the Shadow’s debut campaign in the newly-formed Evergreen Premier League. It will only be the sixth game of the year for the Seattle Stars, who go into the match 1-3-1.
“I expect tomorrow to be a game where we can impose ourselves on the other team, and hopefully continue winning,” said striker Sam Engle of tomorrow’s contest. “I think the season has gone well. We have a good group of guys and we have progressed as a group each week.”
Returning to squad this week is Matt Beaulaurier, who has been busy the past few weeks with high school playoff soccer for Ferris. His run with the Saxons concluded with Ferris finishing as runners-up last weekend.
“I'm really happy with how the guys have played while I was away finishing up my high school soccer season, and I'm very excited to be back out with the older guys to better myself and help out as much as I can,” he said of his busy schedule and its benefits.
About the Opposition: Seattle Stars
The Stars come into the game on the heels of their first victory of the season, downing Wenatchee 2-1 on the road last Sunday, and are unbeaten in their last two with a 2-2 draw against visiting Yakima the week prior. They lost the opening three games 2-4 at Yakima, 0-1 to Vancouver and 0-4 to Bellingham. Last week goalkeeper Scott Barnum stopped a penalty for Seattle, which rallied from a goal down to get the win thanks to Rob Lansche goals in the 39th and first half stoppage time.
All six of Seattle’s goals have come against the central Washington teams as they scored twice in both Yakima games. Dario Meza scored once in each with Guillermo Heraldez boasting the league’s first-ever goal in the league opener and former MLS and USL First Division player Welton Melo tallying in the second meeting between the two. Melo played with Shadow coach Chad Brown with the USL Sounders in 2004-05.
The club was founded in 2011 and played in the American National Soccer League, where it won the league title in 2011 and also the Starfire Premier League. The plays at the Starfire Complex, the training home of the MLS Seattle Sounders and host of numerous soccer events such as the NWAACC Championships and state youth championships.
Next Home Game – Saturday, June 21 vs South Sound
After a pair of road games against the Seattle Stars and Bellingham United in the next two weeks, the Shadow return home to take on the current unbeaten side South Sound FC.
