Rival Yakima rallies to top host Shadow 3-2
Early two-goal lead not enough as visitors find winner in 90th minute

SPOKANE SHADOW NEWS RELEASE  --  Saturday, May 10, 2014

Devin Leon and Mikey Ramos put the host Spokane Shadow up by two in the first half-hour of the contest, but two goals in the next 10 minutes pulled visiting Yakima, the club’s historic foe, even as they eventually came away with the 3-2 road win on a 90th minute dagger from Junior Garcia at Spokane Falls CC Stadium in front of 417.

Seven minutes into the contest Devin Leon (CC Spokane) scored on his collegiate home turf, striking a 19-yard effort from the middle of the pitch that slightly deflected off of a Yakima defender and into the goal.

Mikey Ramos made a fantastic play in the 26th minute to push the lead to two. He collected a loose ball on the left side of the box and drove squarely across the area, dancing around a couple of defenders before letting loose from about 14 yards.

Nine minutes later, however, the Reds found a little magic courtesy of a pair of subs from the 28th minute. Cesar Rodriguez sent a ball up the left side to Hector Valdovinos, who proceeded to cut into the left hand side of the box and fire a shot about 16 yards past goalkeeper Cody Lang.

Less than two minutes later a flurry in the box finished with Yakima even on the scoreboard. A shot from Valdovinos caromed off the crossbar and popped up to Rodriguez, who nodded it home from about six yards out.

Yakima’s winner was stunning, from the timing to the effort. Junior Garcia collected the ball at midfield and, with plenty of space, ripped a line-drive shot from about 32 yards that soared past Lang’s effort for the save.

The Shadow pressed matters in stoppage time with a great chance from Matt Bray, but were unable to find the equalizer in a contest that saw the level of animosity slowly boil until the final whistle when the two teams had a number of players entangled in a heated exchange, marking the return of a long-time rivalry after a 10-year absence.

Both sides had a number of other clear chances. In the 18th minute Ramos chased a ball down before it got to the right endline and sent it across the face of the goal, narrowly missing the head of Micah Weller at the far post. Four minutes later a Yakima throw-in on the left side found its way across the field to Luis Martinez, who sent a low-driven shot just wide of the left post.

In the second half Yakima nearly took the lead in the 55th minute when Rodriguez put a long 27-yard effort over the goal. In the 59th minute Spokane’s Elliot Fauske drove up the left side and shot from the corner of the area. The low effort went right to keeper Jacob Rhoads, but he mishandled the ball, allowing it to roll out to Ramos only to see the follow-up attempt go wide left.
